A note, before you begin

I write to find the architecture beneath ordinary things — the doorways we cross without noticing, the crowds we briefly become, the quiet weather of feeling that passes for a self.

These essays were written slowly, in the margins of years. Read them in any order; they were not built as a staircase, only a set of rooms.
