I want you to close your eyes.
Imagine yourself waking up to a cool breeze rushing between your toes, a light blanket placed over you.
The pale yellow walls shine bright, the direct sun already halfway into the room.
You sit up on the bed, your eyes slowly adjusting to the light. The horizontal aluminium louvers frame the promenade across the bay, the Church standing to the far right of the windows.
You approach the windows and slowly open the door leading to the terrace. Immediately, you feel the heat on your skin, the bare soles of your feet warm against the polished concrete floor. Approaching the edge, you grab the aluminium handrail and look down at the people walking along the promenade. They seem to be in good spirits.
You sit outside on the cane chair as breakfast is served to you. The usual; orange juice, English tea, three sugars, two pork sausages, and baked beans. The Times of Malta headline reads, “Queen’s Diamond Jewel in Pietà, Malta”. You look out towards the horizon, in the direction of Pietà.
Slowly, you make your way to the basement. The Mediterranean sun proving too hot, you choose to walk down the interior masonry staircase.
You walk into the storage room to grab the keys. Stacks of cardboard boxes line the walls. “VINCENTI ESTATES” dominates, the words printed in dark ink across the brown cardboard boxes.
Business is good.
You walk down into the tunnel. The terrazzo tiles stop abruptly against the rough concrete floor finish.
The pier reveals itself, shining against the bright blue sea. Briefly, you wonder what was more difficult to construct, the spanning reinforced concrete cantilever balcony, or the pier itself.
The boat rests quietly alongside the platform. Its curved roof softens the otherwise heavy profile, while the dark timber cabin reflects the movement of the sea through the long aluminium-framed windows.
Slowly, you step onto the boat and into the cabin.
